INJECTIBLE WHITE
from Metrozines.com
t's a known fact that Asian women strive for clear, whiter skin. They slather on pearl creams, scrub with black licorice soaps, and pop bleaching tablets in the hopes that their melanin-producing cells will just give up and call it a day. A rather popularly prescribed whitening tablet is glutathione, a potent antioxidant, from an amino acid derivative found naturally in fruits like avocadoes, oranges, tomatoes and asparagus. Glutathione is mainly stored in our liver, where it is excreted to battle free radicals produced in our system that cause skin blemishes and pigmentations. Many dermatologists prescribe glutathione tablets to people who are looking for a way to improve their skin's tone and clarity.
After six months of daily use, patients prescribed glutathione by their dermatologists begin to notice that their skin has fewer blemishes, and has turned a few shades lighter all over the body. Dermatologists are usually very liberal when prescribing glutathione tablets to patients who can afford it (around P5,040 for a month's supply), because it has been noted to have a whole slew of other health benefits. Dr. Sheila Acosta of the Belo Medical Group shares that "glutathione helps support the immune system and is required for replication of the lymphocyte immune cells. Scientists speculate that consuming increased amounts of glutathione early in life may produce longevity and reduce chronic disease."
The Belo Medical Group has decided to take glutathione intake further by now offering it through an intravenous injection. The idea of having a needle pierced directly into your vein to shoot a hefty amount of glutathione for vanity might be frightening to most patients, but Dr. Acosta explains that there is nothing to worry about.
"Glutathione allergies are rare, and there have been no known side effects to the treatment. We recommend taking glutathione via IV rather than orally, because it is directly delivered into the bloodstream, so the amount being utilized is more predictable," she says.
Dr. Acosta also explains that when taking glutathione orally, the rate of absorption is affected by the patient's diet. At P5,000 a pop, Intra-venous Glutathione (IVG) is not cheap. It is recommended to be done twice a week for three weeks, and then weekly, till 15 sessions are completed. The procedure lasts no longer than a minute, and the shot is administered to the vein at the crook of your elbow and feels like an ant bite.
Despite the cost, whitening fans like Inquirer beauty columnist Kinny Salas can vouch for its effectivity. "I chose glutathione as my way to get back the baby-white skin I had at age four. I had researched and discovered that it is also vital to the immune system, so it helped address two of my major concerns: anti-aging and achieving my lightest skin tone possible." She began by taking glutathione orally for 10 months straight and was happy with the results, but felt that it took too long to achieve. After only five sessions with IVG, Kinny noticed a difference. "My overall skin tone was visibly lighter and the skin on my body could compete in terms of texture, softness, and smoothness to that of my three-year-old niece!"
Kinny did notice some side effects, however. "After the first two sessions, I began to be more hyper than usual, and I had a hard time sleeping. My tolerance for the sun also decreased, and my skin would sting under city sun like it would when I went to the beach."
But Kinny also notes that she began to see extreme results as soon as the ninth session -- she experienced no acne breakouts, year-old scars from acne and scars on her back and legs faded to almost sheer invisibility, rough parts like heels, elbows, and knees became baby soft, and her skin glowed even without foundation. "For now I am happy with my skin tone after the first round of 15 sessions. I will go back to take the oral glutathione for maintenance of my current results."
It is important to note that glutathione was originally intended as an anti-oxidant and immune booster for patients with liver/kidney problems. Its ability to clear skin was only a secondary effect noticed by doctors during the testing period. It has yet to be FDA approved for cosmetic use.
